From Publishers Weekly
Using officers of the North Carolina Highway Patrol as representative of state troopers across the country, Asheville Citizen-Times police reporter Bartlett writes of the careers and lives of those who do this work. After rigorous training, troopers are usually sent to areas where they and county sheriff's officers are the only law enforcers. Their routine patrolling of highways, looking for speeders and drunk drivers, is often anything but routine, particularly when they try to intercept fleeing criminals or have to take charge at the scene of an auto accident. But their work has its humorous side, too, especially when motorists try to wheedle their way out of citations. Bartlett presents both male and female officers, their family lives and their views of the job. Photos not seen by PW. Paperback rights to Pocket Books. Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I may be a little biased, I have members of my family in law enforcement, and unfortunately have lost a family member that was a state trooper. Reading this book really brought back those memories, it also shows the dedication and fearlessness that is needed to pursue this line of work. I can attest it is a way of life, not just a career. These men and women risk their lives day in and day out, and in some cases the pay is not even close to what they deserve. This book was great in showing all that and more. May be little dated but not much as changed in the men and women that go out every day to protect us, technology may have changed but those behind the badge have not.
I bought this book without really knowing what to expect. While I have no desire to ever be a member of law enforcement, I do enjoy learning about how they do their jobs and especially their abilities to manage people and situations. Over the years, I have read a number of "memoirs" of law enforcement, and this one was typical.=== The Good Stuff ===* In some areas, Marie Bartlett does an excellent job of capturing the challenges of life as a North Carolina State Trooper. The dreaded 3AM knocking on a door to tell someone their loved ones won't be coming home and seeung the results of a violent highway accident are all sad and compelling tales of modern law enforcement. Bartlett uses many of the Trooper's own words to capture these incidents, and the emotion and sadness come through.* Bartlett also spends a bit of time on the families of the Troopers. The stress of watching a spouse head out on partrol; the anxiety of watching news reports telling of an officer being injured or killed, and not yet knowing the name; and worse, the arrival of a team of fellow officers in the driveway to deliver the ultimate bad news are all discussed and treated well. The author obviously spent some time understanding the people involved and their various coping mechanisms.* As expected, there are a fair number of "war stories", covering the whole gamut from happy to sad to tragic. Many of these were related in the trooper's own words, with varying degrees of writing quality. None were truly surprising to anyone who has ever read other books in this genre.=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===* It wasn't obvious from the description, but this book was written in the 1980's. Therefore some of the information was a bit dated and almost archaic. Although in other ways, this added a more honest dimension to the book. For example, at this time the first female troopers were appearing, and obviously this was a bit of a "shock" to the male dominated NC State Troopers. The book gives a somewhat unvarnished look at how the male troopers reacted to this, which probably would have been politically-corrected out of later writings. Similar, there are discussions of the "relationships" between male troopers and female civilians that are, at least by today's standards, also politically incorrect.* The quality of the writing seems to deteriorate after about the 50% point in the book. I found myself less and less interested as the pages went on, but I did end up finishing the book.=== Summary ===The book was readable, and had its interesting parts. A few of the stories were poignant, and even heartbreaking, especially the ones involving fatalities either of innocent civilians or State Troopers. Because of the age of the book, and the information presented, I don't know that I'd go out of my way to recommend the book to anyone, but if you are a fan of the genre, it is not a bad way to spend a few hours.
I read this and cried most of the way thru it. So many ppl don't want the cops around until they find themselves in a bind. I'm glad they are there. I am aware there are bad cops just like all professions, but thanks, I'll keep them. Now that my grand daughter has her sites on a young man just out of the academy, this book is even more significant. Also, I used to live in North Carolina so I was aware of many of the areas the story took place
Although it's a dated book, it is still an easy read and is a page turner. Sometimes humorous, other times enlightening and then the inevitable sad stories all combined to make it a good book.
It was exciting. The author managed to put in my mind what must go through each trooper's mind when he or she steps up to a car, especially in the dark. The tragic parts were told with love and compassion and made me understand what the family members must be going through during their time of loss.Very well written book.
Having been to Marshall & the French Broad River about the time this book wasfirst written, I've seen some of the terrain the Troopers work in, Thanks TO everylaw enforcement officer in every state for their dedication to a very difficult, dangerousway of life so I can live a better crime free life.
This was a great read. I have not thought much about what highway officers do so this was a real eye opener. Even though most of the events occurred in the 80s it was still a good read.
Kept me very interested in what these brave people must deal with in their jobs. There is always the unknown of what the reaction will be from the public theymeet on the highways they are trying to keep safe.
