Great book. It address the baseless belief that in Latin-American racism is not as pervasive as in the U.S. The most significant difference is that in Latin-America racism was not codified like in the U.S, but in Latin-America racism has always been enforced at institutional and societal level as a matter of practice. The point is that racism in Latin-America is so sophisticated that it is ingrained in society and people don’t question it or debate about it as much as people do in the U.S.
eye opening work. I really did not know how bad racism and racist behavior is in Latin America. Its pervasive apparently in almost every Latin American Nation. Book is well written and easy to follow.
This is groundbreaking, brilliant work that contextualizes and summarizes Latin American racial politics-- particularly the racial subordination of Afro-Latin@s-- through the lenses of history, law, custom, state practices and social movements. A must read for scholars and students of Latin America and for U.S.-based thinkers to expand their understanding of race, racism, and racial struggle in a comparative and trans-American light.
