The moment I stumbled across this book I was taken back to middle school 1988 when our library first got it in. I remember our entire class was enamored with the book and its intricately designed puzzles and art. The nostalgia was simply overwhelming, and I realized I wanted my own kids to be able to experience it the way that I did. It is now wrapped and sitting under the tree for my eight year old. I simply can't wait for the endless questions about it to begin. It's as stunning and creative as I remember it to be, and well worth every penny.
This is a deceptively simple, beautifully illustrated, picture book about an elephant who throws himself an eleventh birthday party and invites 10 friends. They play various games and then go to eat a feast the elephant prepared only to find that someone already ate all of the food. The elephant quickly makes sandwiches for everyone to enjoy so the story ends happily. We, the reader, are then tasked with solving the mystery of who ate the feast. You start over and look carefully at each illustration which is packed with hidden clues and secret messages to decode. My husband, daughter, and I had a great time solving the riddle. These clues are not easy mind you and seem to be designed for older children and adults. That said, if you enjoy a good puzzle, you will love this book. We literally spent hours as a family working our way through the mystery! So much fun!
I love Graeme Base! I actually purchased this book for my children because I remember as a young child laying for hours in the library looking for the hidden clues and secrets deep within the pages of this book. This has to be my FAVORITE illustrated book of all time. The only reason this particular book got 3 stars is that is came looking like a copy of a copy. the pages were washed out, and some of the illustrations were blurry. Shame. Graeme Base is too beautiful to be wasted on a bad copy of a copy. I wish I would have known the quality of the book before I purchased this copy. Unfortunately, I had tried to purchase directly from Graeme's company itself in Australia and they seemed to direct me to an outside source such as Amazon. If this is your first time reading this book, do the research and make sure you order a good copy. It's well worth it.
Unquestionably, my fave book growing up. This remains one of the most memorable books of my childhood! I recently purchased this and Animalia for my little 3-5 year old cousins (they're advanced readers!), and they absolutely loved it! Kept them quiet for all of Christmas Day hah. I also realized my own collection would be remiss to be missing these books so even though I have no kids, I ended up buying this (and basically an entire Graeme Base collection) as an adult. Hah! This remains the best one, but the others are worthy additions for the artwork alone. The stories are always amusing with complex language (at least, relatively complex for a kid!). Love, love, love Graeme Base.
My 10 year old son and I have spent one of the best hours of our lives together trying to crack the code of this book. We have scoured the pages over and over again finding more and more clues. We still have a ways to go to solve the mystery and I love that we get to spend more time trying to decipher this complex puzzle together. It's also been a great lesson in how we can use technology to research certain things to help us decipher some of the clues. In addition to the many different fascinating ways to solve the mystery, the illustrations are beautiful and the story in rhyme makes for a fantastic read aloud. I can't wait to buy this book for the school library and get the students excited about it too. I have a feeling it will become a fast favorite!
Amazing book, and it's fun for both kids and adults. The puzzles kept me and my partner entertained for hours. It has that "magical journey" feel to it that is characteristic of the most brilliant children's books. The answers to the puzzles are posted in the back of the book- but solving the mystery yourself is so satisfying. The illustrations are so very detailed too- they capture the imagination. If you're still not sure, be sure to read some plot descriptions of this book before you pass this one by.
This poem which is also a mystery is a delight to read.Beware the mystery is not easy to figure out.Fortunately, the author gives you the answer at the end of the book with explanations of how to figure out the mystery.Intricate and inviting illustrations.I would recommend this book to a fifth grader, or perhaps a smart fourth grader, and definitely all adults.
This book is AWESOME! I love Graeme Base. The illustrations are phenomenal as always, and I love the puzzle this book presents, it's so unique and fun! Also, love all the hidden images as well. A definite staple to the book collection, I highly recommend it for kiddo's ever inquisitive imaginations!
