There are so many creations that have forwarded humanity. Imagine life without electricity, penicillin, or the beloved Twinkie. My life was a hollow void comparable to a black hole until I discovered the Notebook of Doom series. The greatest works of literature touch the heart and soul in ways unimaginable. I laughed, I cried, I had a craving for malted milk balls and a Philly.To be fair, I purchased this set for my 6 year old son. He was very confident with Dr. Seuss and Curious George, so I wanted to find a series that was challenging yet quirky. When we cracked open that first book, the angels sang. There is something magical when a child not only sees accepts a challenge, but pours everything into it.Troy Cummings' The Notebook of Doom has a wacky seriousness about it. The books have a "Leave It To Beaver" quality...if the Beav was Rod Serling.The story is about...you know what, just buy it. It's fun, campy, and has a very honest point of view. And my kid loves them. His reading confidence has gone up & he actually asks to if he can stay up an extra five minutes to "finish a chapter". That, in itself, makes a father's heart swell with pride.
I can’t say enough good things about this series. My son got the first book as a Christmas present, and after he read it to me, I knew we had a winner. He loved it, and I thought the book was clever and funny. (It’s not often I can enjoy a kids’ book as much as he does.) I started buying him other books in the series, and we’re now up through the 8th one, I think. These books are suspenseful but not scary. The monsters are “fun†monsters—more annoying than dangerous—so not likely to induce nightmares or anything. We can’t wait to finish the series, although we’ll probably be bummed once we’re done. (For reference, my son is in kindergarten but is a very advanced reader. He can read these completely on his own with just a little help with a couple words per book.)
My son is in kindergarten and is learning to read. I bought these books for reading aloud before bed. He couldnt get enough and kept begging me to read another chapter. We laughed hard at Alexander's funny dad and discussed how we would battle the creatures. We finished book one in one night. My son said he couldnt wait to read the next book tomorrow. Thats why Im on Amazon; to order the next box set! I figure by the time the weekend is over we will need it.
This is a great series for young readers. My grandson is 7 and an avid reader. These characters engaged him right away--he reads and re-reads each book and is anxious to collect all 13. Also carries them to school. He's particularly engaged in creating his own "monsters." Highly recommend.
I bought these for my 7 year old son who has gotten more into reading lately, and he blew through them. He really enjoyed the series and wants his sister to read them when she is a little older. They arrived quickly and were just as pictured. The box case is nice to hold the set together.
LOVE having these in the boxed set! Our 5 year old daughter thinks they are amazing.
My 5th grade son, who is a reluctant reader, requested and loved this series. He read all of them.
My 8 year old absolutely loves these books. I have had him read them aloud to me and they are unique and fun to listen to. What a creative writer and a fairly good value for 5 books.
