I received my set a few days ago and so far I am really impressed. If it seems like a good value to you after reading the description, you are right, it is. You get 9 audio CDs, each about an hour long or so. There are three textbooks included also. These are much longer than I thought they would be, in excess of 200 pages each. I don't know about anyone else, but I am worn out on doing things on the computer, so the thought of having CDs I could pop into the stereo and then just lay on my bed with the book open seemed like a pretty inviting idea. Luckily, the info in the books is recent, everything seems current, and you won't be stuck with archaic, overly formal things that would only be appropriate for the Portuguese Royal Court of 1743 A.D. (That had been a problem with other companies in the past). The books also come with notes about common practices in Brazil (I was wondering if they still use military time, and there is a note about that). There is a nice sensibility here in terms of what you need to learn (they cover everything) vs. what people actually say, so they may teach you something but give you a heads up about what is typically said in all reality (this will include regional differences in pronunciation).The CDs have at least 5 narrators. They all sound a tad different from one another, and that is good. You need some variety to get an idea of what the nuts and bolts are as opposed to slight regional variations. There are additional resources online, including a large PDF with phrases. The textbooks also serve as workbooks, so you do some reading, some exercises and some quizzes. There is a great deal of instruction in the books about pronunciation. With this language, that is a huge help. I would say this set is equivalent to at least two semesters of instruction at the college level. Imagine that for this price. I have not been to Brazil in a long time, but to relearn everything here has been great.
I'm not big on writing reviews for products, but this is a must have for people really looking to learn Brazilian Portuguese. I went to Brazil 3 years ago while studying abroad and have been wanting to learn the language ever since! I am currently doing a "language exchange" with a woman who recently moved to the United States from Brazil, and we have found this book useful when we teach each other (She teaches me Portuguese, I teach her English). These books have helped refresh my memory as well as build on the rudimentary knowledge I've retained since going to Brazil. They have very straight-forward chapters and the structure of each lesson helps with retention. Most of the vocabulary in the books are modern and conversational, and the audio books have been helpful in between our lessons. I have not seen many posts on here that indicate how long it took to become fluent using this program, but I will hopefully remember to give an update once I am fluent or pretty confident in my ability to be understood. That way American English speakers can have an idea of how long it will take to learn Portuguese with this program.I believe going to Brazil has given me an edge when it comes to recognizing sounds and phrasing of sentences that you simply don't hear in American English. However, I believe even a true novice could successfully use this program without feeling intimidated.I would recommend this book for beginners and intermediate learners, people who are a bit rusty and need to jog their memory, or people who are doing a language exchange like I am!By the way, my language partner plans on buying the book set as well because it's helping her understand the English equivalent of Portuguese vocabulary! How's that for useful?
I had several years of Portuguese when I was in college, and now (20 years later) I would like to get back to it. I was looking for a text that was not too dense and technical, but not dumbed-down either. I am VERY happy with the 3 books...the material is presented at just the right speed for me, and the pages are pleasing to look at (not cluttered).The CDs are a disappointment...I don't know where they found the people pronouncing the phrases. I have friends from several areas of Brazil and have never heard accents like these. Maybe it's because the people are pronouncing the words and phrases in an exaggeratedly slow fashion. I find it downright painful to listen to. Also, I like to listen to educational CDs while driving, and these are not ideal for that purpose.My recommendation is -- buy the package -- the books alone are worth the price. Use the CDs for frisbees. Then, visit the website for FSI language courses, and download the mp3s there. This is the course I learned with 20 years ago -- it's now available for free (in the public domain)! You will hear Portuguese with several regional accents and spoken at a natural speed.
This product serves as a way to memorize Portuguese phrases, but falls short of helping you to build a solid foundation in the language. The "vocabulary builder", for example, is actually a "phrase builder." The student is left to guess the Portuguese rules for pronunciation and the meaning of each individual word in the phrase. However, you do learn to to memorize such phrases as "How are you?" "And a pleasure to meet you." My largest pet peeve is that the beginner's level doesn't even cover how to pronounce the Portuguese alphabet! That's problematic. How am I supposed to spell my name? Furthermore, there isn't much phonetic breakdown of how to pronounce sentences. In Portuguese, words and letters are often strung together or "swallowed" so it's difficult to discern the correct pronunciation. I wish there was a phonetic breakdown of how to say each individual word in the phrase.This program has proven that I'll need to join a traditional language class or get a private instructor.
