wonderful short bursts of English History,,, all the way down the line (and its a very long line). They are short vignettes of lives lived Each bio is about a page, or two at the most. I really enjoy picking it up from time to time and rereading too. Its a great source of information and i heartily recommend this to anyone with similar interests.
Was a gift and had to read first.
It's 4 1/2 x 3 1/4 inches; it fits in your pocket or the palm of your hand; it tells you what you need to know about every British sovereign, with plentiful pictures. Why was James I also James VI? What made Ethelred Unready? Who were "the Maypole" and "the Elephant"? All lies within these little covers. It is a great portable, lightweight history of 20 centuries. For a tourist going into monarchic overload at Britain's many castles, churches, portraits and monuments, this is perfect.
One of my favourites, and will surely become yours!Colour-coded sections cover 1. Pre-Saxon Rule; 2. Scotland, Ireland, and Wales; 3. Saxons, Normans and Plantagenets; 4. Tudors and Stuarts; 5. Hanover to Windsor. The Compendium (part 6) includes Crown Jewels, Nicknames, and Genealogical Charts.It is particularly good on ancient British chiefs and Celtic tribes, rarely covered in other guides. A short two-page overview of each monarch is preceded by a summary box containing birth and death dates and places, parentage, accession to the throne, coronation, authority (i.e. status and titles), death date and burial details.The major public and personal events of each reign are outlined. Also, there are features on such events as the Roman Conquest, the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms, Wars of the Roses, the Gunpowder Plot, Home Rule and the British Empire. Contemporary illustrations, e.g. the Bayeux Tapestry for the Norman Conquest, lend period flavour.A perfect introduction, overview, or review. It's a useful first source before proceeding to longer royal histories or individual biographies.Essential.
I saw this at Tower of London bookstore and wished I'd pick it up - at the time, I was too frugal. This is a very small book (at most 3"x4" and about 1.5" thick). As noted by the other reviewer, you get about 2 pages (left, right) on each minor king and a bit more on the major royalty. An excellent introduction that helps you keep the 1300s, 1400s, 1500s straight if you want to explain (A) the difference between, say, Shakespeare's Richard III and Henry IV to your junior high kid. Or (B) which king was beheaded leading to an 11-year gap in the chain of royalty, over a century before the French Revolution. Or (C) why the name of the royal family suddenly changed to House of Windsor around 1910.
This is a terrific little book. If you ever want to read the essentials of the entire sweep of English history, from Roman days through the various tribes, into the Dark Ages, across the Middle Ages and up dear old Lizzie and the present day, this is a great place to start. The authors manage to capture all of the essential facts of each ruler's reign, together with some occasional good trivia. There are also section on Irish, Welsh and Scottish rulers (the latter are grimly amusing because for a long time almost every one seems to end with "Killed in battle").Well-researched and scholarly but highly readable throughout.
